Give the door and sides a good scrub with the sugar soap solution and a sponge/cloth to remove any traces of dirt and grease. Rinse off thoroughly, then allow to dry (remember, wood can take quite a while to dry, especially if the weather is damp or cool).Surface preparation required in addition to the above – clean with Frenchic Sugar Soap, rinse and dry thoroughly. Hand-sand sufficiently to abrade the surface. Wipe off any dust, paint away! For a great demonstration, see our video. Exterior wooden surfaces in particular can retain moisture for up to 48 hours after rainfall or preparation. Ensure the items are thoroughly dry prior to painting. Before you start painting, ensure you follow these key preparation steps to achieve the best end result: I used the Dusky Blush Al Fresco paint on our kitchen door and it was a dream to paint with and gives a gorgeous matte, smooth finish. You just need to clean the door with sugar soap, lightly sand, wipe off the dust and paint. Be careful with it for a few weeks as it hardens up or ‘cures’. If you’re not using a self-priming paint, you’ll need to prime the door. This can add extra time to the process. Apply primer across the whole door – and don’t forget the sides. If you’ve used our self-priming Al Fresco paint, there’s no need to worry about this stage.

I’m not so delighted with the finish though. The first coat went on OK but then it went all lumpy and bobbly: imagine dipping gloss paint into cotton wool, and dragging it around, and you’ll get an image of how bad the finish was. I fully accept that this may have been user error, but given how difficult I found this paint to work with, I can’t recommend it. Our uPVC door with one coat of Zinsser All Coat Exterior Satin paint looks fine. After two coats, it’s gone horribly lumpy. It looks a bit like wood grain. How I Solved the Door Paint Problem I get lots of comments from people who are amazed that it’s possible to paint uPVC as it’s made of plastic. As you can see, it is possible, but it does take time and patience. If you’ve ever wondered how to makeover your uPVC front door using paint, read on for my guide on how to transform an old plastic front door. For ferrous metal, treat rust, remove any loose or flaking coatings and sand smooth - in these circumstances, we recommend 2 coats of Frenchic Finishing Coat as a base for the paint.

Always ensure you have enough paint for your whole project. When more than 1 tin of the same colour is needed, it is good practice to ensure batch numbers are identical or to intermix batches prior to commencing painting.
