The profile on this rum is complex, likely a result of the careful and deliberate aging process. The sugar cane is harvested from local plantations before being double-distilled in their copper stills. Ron Barceló is a Dominican rum that is considered an iconic brand, with production localised in the main sugarcane‐producing province of the country: San Pedro de Macoris, in the Dominican Republic. Our Alcoholes Finos Dominicanos distillery is there, as is the Ron Barceló production plant. Rum production is achieved under a 100%‐controlled process by the brand, guaranteeing the best quality of Dominican rum, from the sugarcane fields to the bottling of the final product. We are the only producer of Dominican rum that produces its rums from the fermentation and direct distillation of the sugarcane juice. What are the trends in the rum category right now? The Ron Barceló brand was introduced in 1930 by Spanish immigrant Julian Barceló, domestically Ron Barceló is widely accepted as the market leader. You can find a lot of history on the Barceló and Dominican rum in general at the Dominican Rum Guide. The optimum product was obtained by experimenting with different brands on the local market, and in 1950, the Ron Barceló brand was launched with the products Barceló Blanco and Dorado (white and gold rums respectively), which were an immediate success. Some 20 years later, Ron Barceló Añejo (a mature rum), was added to the portfolio. [3]

Thanks to the careful preparation of each product, adapting to the consumers’ tastes around the world, and to an international marketing strategy, Ron Barceló now reaches countries on five continents. These include competitive markets such as Russia, the United States, Spain, Germany, Czechia, China, Chile, Colombia or Peru. A younger expression from Brugal, their XV Rum is a blend of rums, aged first in white American oak barrels for three to eight years. They are then aged for an additional two to three years in ex Pedro Zimenex sherry casks. The result is the perfect combination of dry and sweet with incredible smoothness. The nose is sweet and inviting with notes of toasted oak and creme brulee. The palate is initially sweet which leads to a little oiliness. In the middle, you’ll find notes of traditional Trinidad rum with mineral notes and flavors of vanilla, nutmeg, and butterscotch. The mouthfeel is thin and easy to sip. 3. Ron Barceló’s rum origins date to 1929 when Julián Barceló arrived in the Dominican Republic from Spain with the aim of creating the best rum in the world. The next year, Barceló & Co was founded, and production and commercialisation began. However, it was not before 1950, after years of experimentation, that the brand really positioned itself on its local market with two products: Barceló Blanco and Dorado.

That same year the bottles for Ron Barceló Imperial, Gran Añejo and Añejo were redesigned and a new era began. The distillery was founded in the 1800s meaning they have generations of knowledge and expertise to utilize and grow from. They originally founded the distillery in Cuba but relocated to the Dominican Republic out of necessity in 1959. Though it’s not aged nearly as long as the previous expression, this one is still top-notch. It contains a blend of rums that are aged for an average of six years. The Dominican environment is hot and humid which does increase the speed of aging. This expression is aged almost entirely in American bourbon barrels which are routinely scraped and re-charred to achieve the optimal flavor. With the idea of expanding the brand, in the 90s Barceló & Co. gave a group of Spanish businessmen, with a long history of producing wines and spirits, the rights to export Ron Barceló. These entrepreneurs founded Ron Barceló SRL.. In 2006, by then sold on 25 international markets, Ron Barceló SRL. took over Ron Barceló completely, with the third generation Barceló's, namely the Barceló Díaz and Garcia families, remaining on the Board of Directors.

The Story

Launched earlier this year as part of Ron Barceló’s Rare Blends Collection, this rum is a nod to the producer’s unwavering commitment creating distinctive and unique spirits.

Spirits are leaning towards premiumisation, and Barceló rums are a part of this trend. Consumers are beginning to appreciate and demand the organoleptic properties of high-end dark aged rums and different cask-finished rums. Even if we have gained recognition among the rum producers, there is a lot of work to do for consumers to fully recognise the premium rum industry. Overall, the Ron Barcelo Imperial Rum is matured for ten years, finishing with two years in horizontal French oak barrels. This is contrary to the traditional vertical aging in bourbon barrels. The global marketing director for Dominican rum brand Ron Barceló shares her thoughts on trends in the category and what makes her brand unique. Chiara Pennacchio

Nowadays, Ron Barceló SRL. still produces only Ron Barceló, which is sold in over 50 countries, ranking it the 4th largest exporter of rum in the world. [4] Rum elaboration plant [ edit ]

Take a trip to the Dominican Republic with Ron Barceló and discover the brand’s latest pride and joy: Barceló Imperial Maple Cask. This feature was originally published in the November 2021 issue of The Spirits Business magazine. How localised is the production process of Ron Barceló rum? This ultra-premium rum follows in the footsteps of Barceló Imperial Porto Cask, and Barceló Imperial Mizumara Cask.

In the glass Barceló Anejo reveals itself to be a nice golden/orange colour. The nose is pretty muted and uninspiring. A little alcohol and some light vanilla. There’s nothing wrong with the nose but little to get excited about either. The hydrometer test shows a little added sugar – I don’t think this has much influence it may smooth out some of the rougher edges. It doesn’t detract from this being a more authentic style of rum. The distillery was founded by Andres Brugal Montaner. Originally Spanish, he moved his family to the Dominican. He began experimenting with distillation and cane juice while still in Cuba, though, giving him some experience to build on. He opened the distillery almost immediately after settling in the Dominican Republic in 1888. While Brugal have made some impact in the UK – their Anejo is available in a couple of supermarkets now. Bermudez and Barceló continue to be very popular in Spain but have made little inroad into the UK market. This determination to innovate constantly has helped Barceló reach its sustainability goals. In 2016, it became the first rum in the world to receive the Carbon Neutral certification, by quantifying, reducing and compensating emissions during the entire life cycle of its products. By doing so, the brand strives to follow the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals 2030.
